Photo Outtings

First Light

20111014_9823-Edit-Edit

Waking up early than normal I decided to head to Boulder to catch the first light of the day. I contemplated heading to Chautauqua Park but decided to try and make the sunrise at Settler’s Park. The park, which is located at the entrance of Boulder Canyon, showcases some amazing scenery and rock formations. I lucked out with the timing as I ascended the ridge right when the Sun was rising over the Eastern horizon.… Read More

Lunch Walk

20111012_9657-2

In the warmer months of the year I usually take a walk in lieu of a lunch while at work. And with the sun shining brightly, today was no exception! The bright light illuminated all the Autumn colors alongside Boulder Creek and made for some wonderful photography.… Read More

Full Moon Setting

20111012_9595

Having a photo-shoot later in the day, I lucked out to have my camera with me when I noticed the Full Moon setting above the Rocky Mountains. Knowing that going any closer to the mountains would result in less time to photograph, I decided to head to the East side of Standley Lake. As I arrived at the lake the winds were howling and any photography was definitely a challenge.… Read More

Snowy Divide

20111010_9575

The high country this weekend was hit with the first snowstorm of the season. Things started to clear out yesterday but even this morning the Continental Divide was strikingly white against the early morning skies. The views this morning were taken along Highway 128, which in my estimation is one of the most beautiful drives along the Front Range.… Read More

Creek Light

20111007_9513_4

Before heading into work I caught the sunrise along South Boulder Creek near the Mesa Trailhead. Thinking it wouldn’t be too cold this dawn I was surprised to find myself in a stiff cold wind. Taking photos for only a little bit of time I soon retreated to the warmth of my Jeep and out of the cold wind. It sure looks like the season of Autumn is finally upon us!… Read More

Fall Sunrise

20111006_9495

After finally getting a decent night’s sleep I decided to try my luck and capture the sunrise this morning. As I headed out in the early morning dawn I noticed a few high flying clouds above. With the majority of the Eastern horizon clear I knew that it was shaping up to be a wonderful sunrise. Racing against the coming Sun, I soon arrived at Plainview Road. This area is definitely my favorite place to catch the first rays of… Read More

First of Autumn

20110923_9345-Edit

Being extremely busy lately I haven’t had the time to take too many photos. But since today is the official first day of Autumn, I just had to get out and take some photos. Even though there were barely any clouds floating in the skies, the sharp light and Autumn grasses made for a truly wonderful morning. I have an extremely busy month ahead and I just hope to take some photos of the Autumn colors soon!… Read More

Lake Morning

20110911_8899-Edit

Never been one to sleep outside I awoke multiple times during the cool night. Eventually waking up before the sunrise, my father and I grabbed our camera gear and headed to the point we visited yesterday evening. The calm morning breeze and colorful clouds added to the serenity of the lake below. What a great time with family and nature, hopefully we’ll do this more often!… Read More

Evening on the Lake

20110910_9181

For the first time in many years we finally had a family camping trip. Joining me was my father, two brothers and one of my nieces. The trip was done on short notice so after not finding places near Denver we settled on camping at Lake Pueblo State Park. Located just west of downtown Pueblo, CO the lake offers quite a few campgrounds and wonderful scenery. I almost didn’t bring my camera but glad I did as the sunset was quite… Read More

Late Summer

20110826_8335

Having been a few weeks since I’ve done any nature photography I decided it was time to wake up early and catch the sunrise. Often times when I’m in need of inspiration I go to Plainview road, as there is always something to shoot. On this occasion the sunrise was somewhat lacking but luckily the late Summer grasses and plants made up for it. It’s just amazing how peaceful it can be on the grasslands with nothing but the gentle wind and open… Read More

Evening Falls

20110808_7053-Edit

A few hours after crossing the Colorado border we arrived at the state park only to find that the campground was booked solid. Seeing it was Monday I was quite surprised but we decided to check out the falls for a few hours anyway. For this late in the season the waterfalls were moving pretty good and the late afternoon light really made it special. As the sun began to set we left the park and thought about camping at… Read More

Bighorn Morning

20110808_6943

A crisp morning greeted us as we checked out of the small motel in Jackson. After filling up my tank we left the town and started back towards Colorado. Driving through the Bridger-Teton National Forest, I noticed some faint movement in the tall grasses and realized that there were a few Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep grazing along the road. After finding a turnout I pulled a U-turn and stopped near them along the shoulder. They didn’t seem to mind… Read More

Evening Storms

20110807_7785

After leaving the stormy Midway Geyser area we proceeded to the famous Old Faithful Geyser. Upon arriving we noticed a large crowd gathered around the geyser, signaling the eminent explosion of scalding hot water. As we waited to see Old Faithful be faithful the storm we just left found us again. With rain and crazy clouds surrounding Old Faithful the geyser began to erupt with all its power. Once the activity at the geyser died down we headed to some shops and had a… Read More

Midway Geyser Basin

Leaving the Paint Pots we noticed even larger plumes of steam towards the South. As we got closer we figured the majority of the steam was coming from the Grand Prismatic Pool. On my last visit to the park I didn’t get a chance to see the Grand Prismatic Pool so I was pretty excited to see it today. After finding a parking spot, or should I say after creating one, we walked across the bridge and up towards the… Read More

Fountain Paint Pots

20110807_7513

As we continued South along the Western portion of the loop we started noticing more and more geothermal activity. Having seen a geyser pretty close to the road we stopped to take a closer look. After finally finding a parking spot we walked around the boardwalks and watched the Paint Pots and Geyser explode. The colors of the pools and geysers are so striking that in many ways they look quite fake. Apparently all the colors come from many different types of bacteria… Read More

Waterfalls

20110807_7434

One of the great things about Yellowstone is the fact that there are so many amazing waterfalls along the Loop. Each one has its unique characteristics and none of them disappoint. The first waterfall we stopped at was the beautiful Rustic Falls (47ft). It used to be listed on the park map but for some reason it no longer marked. The best views of the waterfall is right along the road making it quite dicey when large RVs pass by… Read More

Mammoth Hot Springs

20110807_7380

Entering the Mammoth Hot Springs area we decided to take a quick detour to the North entry gate so I could get a National Parks Pass. When we arrived earlier in the day the East entry station was empty so I couldn’t get a new National Parks Pass. I would highly recommend anyone that loves nature to get a pass as it allows entry to any National Park and just about any BLM or National Forest fee areas. Re-entering the park we stopped at Upper… Read More

The Loop

20110807_7325

As we drove north along the Loop we neared Dunraven Pass and noticed quite a few people looking up the mountain. Being curious to what they were looking at, we stopped alongside the road and inquired to what was there. They informed us that up the hill a female Grizzly Bear was foraging on some vegetation. Upong looking a little closer at the hillside we spotted the bear and walked along the road until we got a better view. The bear was still a long distance away but I was… Read More

Waterfall Rush

Continuing along the Loop we took the turn-off for Artist point which has the classic view of the Lower Falls(308ft) and the Canyon. Even though I’ve been there before the view is still breathtaking to behold. Seeing that it was still in the morning there were only a handful of people out taking in the view. After taking some photos my friend and I went back to the parking area and noticed multiple buses of people arriving, we left just in… Read More

Yellowstone Morning

20110807_7161_2

Leaving Cody early this morning we drove to the East entrance of Yellowstone National Park. We arrived at the park just before the sunrise and stopped a few times along the road. When we approached Yellowstone Lake the steam vents at Steamboat point were tainting the air with a wonderous sulfur smell. Something that we’d be smelling for more or less the rest of the day. Passing the Lake we went North on the loop alongside the mighty Yellowstone River. I was hoping to see more… Read More

Denver Calm

20110731_6774

Waking up early this morning my Father and I headed to the Denver City Park. Located just west of downtown the park offers wonderful views of the city as well as the mountains. Along with the rather pleasant sunrise it was nice to see the Prismatic Fountain running as it has been mostly off due to damage from a early Summer thunderstorm.… Read More

Divide

20110723_6469

My Father and I decided to head to Mount Evans for this morning’s sunrise. We left town around 4:30am and it wasn’t until we were near Idaho Springs that we spotted a sign that said Mount Evans would be closed from 9am-2pm for a bike race. Knowing that we didn’t want to be rushed or compete with all the bicycle traffic, we kept driving to Loveland Pass. Arriving at the pass 30min later we started hiking along the Continental Divide towards one of the… Read More

Creekside

20110717_6404

I met up with my brother Gabe this morning at Prospect Park in Wheat Ridge, CO. We decided to talk his dog Lucy for a walk alongside Cleer Creek. Along the creek we saw quite a lot of wildlife including at least 5 juvenile Coopers Hawks and a Six-lined Racerunner Lizard. We were there for a few hours before the heat made it too tiring.… Read More

Miraflores

20110627_3787

We flew into Lima early this afternoon and had a few hours to kill before or midnight flight back to the states. So we secured our bags at the airport and headed to the Miraflores district of Lima. Once there we met up with a couple of Erik’s friends, Madelaine & Sophie, at the restaurant La Red. After our wonderful last meal in Peru we walked a few blocks over to the Pacific Ocean near the Parque Tres Picos. Instead of having… Read More
