Journey to White Sands

Journey to White Sands

My friend and I decided late last night to go for a multi-day trip to New Mexico. After finally getting to sleep at around 11:30pm I woke up at 3:30am this morning. We decided to leave at 4:15am because it was going to be a long trip to White Sands. After passing countless small towns we finally arrived at Alamogordo which is near the dunes. From the town the entrance to White Sands was only 15miles away. Our first stop in the National Monument was the visitor center where we got our permit to camp in the backcountry. The sites are all around .9miles from the trailhead and we decided on site #3. The strong winds made putting up our tent much more of a hassle then it should have been.

After setting up camp we returned to the jeep and headed to town for dinner. Once our stomachs were filled to the rim with mexican food we went back to camp. While walking back to our site the sunset was in full swing overhead. The sunset was beautiful as the white sand absorbed much of the color in the sky.

3day/2night Trip Total: 1482miles, 25 hrs. 10min. of driving
